Why Utah’s Wildfires Are Exploding: The Weather Behind the Flames

Extreme heat, prolonged drought and powerful winds have created ideal conditions for explosive wildfire growth across Utah. As the Cottonwood and Babylon fires become two of the largest active wildfires in the United States, meteorologists explain how critically dry fuels, low humidity and fire-generated weather are driving one of the state’s most severe fire seasons in years.

A dangerous combination of prolonged drought, extreme heat, critically dry vegetation and strong winds has turned parts of Utah into a tinderbox, fuelling one of the state’s most destructive wildfire seasons in years.

As of July 6, the Cottonwood Fire has burned 95,807 acres in the Fishlake National Forest east of Beaver and is 47% contained. Meanwhile, the rapidly growing Babylon Fire in southeastern Utah has expanded to 96,594 acres, overtaking Cottonwood as the largest active wildfire in the United States.

Meteorologists and fire behaviour analysts say the current weather pattern has created ideal conditions for fast-moving, high-intensity wildfires.

Extreme Heat and Drought Create Critical Fire Conditions

The foundation for this wildfire outbreak was laid long before the first flames appeared.

Months of below-average rainfall, combined with persistent heat, have steadily dried out grasses, shrubs and forests across southern Utah. The lack of moisture has left vegetation at critically low fuel moisture levels, allowing fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly.

Temperatures have remained well above seasonal averages, with triple-digit heat affecting many lower-elevation areas while mountain regions have also experienced unusually warm conditions. Overnight humidity recovery has been poor, preventing fuels from regaining moisture after sunset.

Fire meteorologists say even large trees, which typically retain moisture longer into summer, are now burning readily because of the prolonged drying trend.

Wind has become one of the biggest challenges for firefighters.

On July 6, the Cottonwood Fire faced the threat of lightning and powerful thunderstorm outflow winds that could exceed 45 mph (72 km/h). Even when storms produce little rainfall, these gusts can rapidly push flames into unburned vegetation and carry burning embers well beyond established fire lines.

At the Babylon Fire, persistent winds have repeatedly driven rapid fire spread through exceptionally dry timber and brush.

Fire managers say these conditions make containment extremely difficult, as shifting winds can quickly change the direction and intensity of the fire.

One of the most concerning atmospheric features developing over the Babylon Fire is the formation of pyrocumulus clouds.

These towering clouds develop when intense heat from a wildfire forces smoke and hot air high into the atmosphere. Under unstable conditions, they can generate their own weather, including powerful downdrafts, erratic wind shifts and lightning.

These sudden changes can dramatically increase fire activity and pose serious risks for firefighters working on the ground.

Cottonwood Fire Leaves Lasting Damage

While weather conditions continue to challenge suppression efforts, the Cottonwood Fire has already left a devastating impact on local communities.

Trevor Barnson, owner of Straight Arrow Ranch near Circleville, estimates he lost around 30 cattle after flames swept through roughly two-thirds of his summer grazing allotment in the Fishlake National Forest.

Burned rangeland is expected to require at least three years before it can once again support livestock, adding to the economic strain already created by drought and rising agricultural costs.

Firefighters continue mop-up operations around Eagle Point, Oak Creek, South Fork of North Creek and Anderson Meadows while using infrared aircraft and drones to locate hidden hotspots inside the fire perimeter.

The Babylon Fire, which started on June 26, remains 0% contained despite the efforts of more than 1,100 firefighters.

Officials warn that critically dry vegetation, unstable atmospheric conditions and strengthening winds could allow the fire to continue expanding in the coming days. Several communities remain under “SET” evacuation status, meaning residents should be prepared to leave on short notice if conditions worsen.

Emergency closures also remain in effect across parts of the Manti-La Sal National Forest and surrounding public lands.

NOAA’s GOES-18 and Joint Polar Satellite System satellites continue providing real-time observations of fire intensity, smoke movement and fire growth, helping emergency managers respond to rapidly changing conditions.

Forecasts indicate that hot temperatures, low humidity and increasing winds will persist through much of the week. Without a significant shift to cooler, wetter weather, Utah’s critically dry landscape is expected to remain highly vulnerable to additional large wildfire outbreaks through the remainder of the summer.
