Chile is experiencing one of its most significant winter storm events in years as a powerful train of Pacific frontal systems continues to sweep across the country, tapping into an intense atmospheric river that is funneling exceptional amounts of moisture inland. The prolonged weather pattern has unleashed torrential rainfall, destructive winds, dangerous coastal waves and rapidly rising rivers, triggering widespread flooding across central and southern Chile while forecasters warn that the heaviest rainfall has yet to fall in some areas.
According to Chile’s Meteorological Directorate (DMC), the event is being driven by successive Pacific frontal systems embedded within a strong atmospheric river transporting exceptional amounts of tropical moisture toward central Chile. As this moisture-laden air reaches the country’s rugged terrain, it is forced upward over the coastal mountain ranges and the Andes, dramatically enhancing rainfall through a process known as orographic lifting.

An atmospheric river is a long, narrow corridor of concentrated water vapor that transports enormous amounts of moisture through the atmosphere, often from tropical or subtropical regions toward higher latitudes. Frequently described as “rivers in the sky,” these systems can carry as much water as some of the world’s largest rivers. When they make landfall and encounter mountain ranges, the moist air rises, cools and condenses, often producing prolonged periods of heavy rainfall or mountain snowfall. While atmospheric rivers are a regular feature of Chile’s winter climate, stronger events can produce widespread flooding when they remain stalled over the same region.
Meteorologists said central Chile entered the peak of the event on Friday, with the most intense rainfall forecast across the Valparaíso, Coquimbo and Metropolitan regions, including Santiago. Additional heavy rain is expected through at least Sunday, maintaining a high risk of flash flooding, landslides and overflowing rivers. The DMC described the current event as one of Chile’s most significant winter storms in recent years, warning that, if forecast rainfall totals are verified, it could become the country’s most intense July rainfall episode since records began.

The storm has affected at least ten of Chile’s sixteen regions as it gradually shifts northward. Besides torrential rain, the system has generated wind gusts of up to 160 km/h (99 mph) in exposed areas, powerful coastal waves, rapidly rising rivers and widespread flooding.
Authorities have declared Red Alerts in parts of the Valparaíso Region because of the high risk of landslides and debris flows. Emergency evacuations have been ordered for several communities along the Marga Marga, Quilpué, Petorca and Mapocho rivers as water levels continue to rise. The Petorca River has drawn particular attention after years of extremely low flows during Chile’s prolonged megadrought, with the current storm sending water levels rising once again.

The Biobío Region remains among the hardest hit, where floodwaters have inundated communities, roads and infrastructure. Large waves generated by the storm have also flooded coastal neighborhoods, adding storm surge impacts to the inland flooding caused by the prolonged rainfall.

According to Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED), more than 2,500 people remain isolated, primarily in the Coquimbo Region, while hundreds have been evacuated and around one hundred homes have been destroyed or suffered major damage. Nearly 400,000 households remain without electricity, mainly in the Valparaíso Region, after strong winds toppled trees and damaged power infrastructure. Classes have also been suspended across nine regions.
Mining operations have not escaped the storm. State-owned Codelco suspended surface work at its Andina mine and temporarily halted ore shipments from the El Teniente open-pit mine because of heavy snowfall affecting mountain routes. Anglo American activated preventive safety protocols, while Antofagasta Minerals restricted access to its Los Pelambres mine and reduced non-essential activities. Chile’s main northern copper and lithium producing region has largely avoided the worst conditions.
At least four people have died in weather-related incidents since the storm began, underscoring the dangerous conditions created by flooding, strong winds and storm cleanup operations.
With the atmospheric river expected to continue feeding moisture into successive Pacific storm systems through the weekend, emergency officials warn that the flood threat is far from over. Saturated soils, swollen rivers and additional heavy rainfall will keep the risk of flash flooding and landslides elevated even after the strongest rain begins to ease.
