Warehouse Blaze Destroys Homes in Chile’s Concepción

Massive fire displaces 50, injures 3 in Chillancito neighborhood.

A large and fast-moving fire severely damaged at least 10 homes in the Chillancito sector of Concepción, Biobío Region, Chile, after igniting in a clothing warehouse around 08:30 local time (LT) on July 24, 2025. The blaze displaced 50 people, injured three, and forced the evacuation of nearby daycares.

The fire began in a warehouse storing imported secondhand clothing, operated by Rags United, at the intersection of Camilo Henríquez and Santa Sofía streets. It then spread to neighboring homes in the Santa Clara sector, fueled by highly flammable materials and winds up to 60 km/h (37 mph).

More than 300 firefighters from five municipalities—Concepción, Talcahuano, Penco, Hualpén, and San Pedro de la Paz—responded to the emergency. Their efforts extended for over 12 hours. As of the evening, the fire was reported as contained but not fully extinguished.

Among the injured were three people with airway burns, including a married couple who were hospitalized. Authorities also evacuated two daycare centers as a precaution due to toxic black smoke. Local officials urged residents to wear masks and avoid exposure to hazardous emissions.

To support displaced families, the municipality set up an emergency shelter at Liceo Balmaceda, where 24 people, including eight children, had taken refuge as of late evening. Mayor Héctor Muñoz expressed concern over the volume of flammable materials in the warehouse and emphasized the urgency of delivering assistance to affected residents.

An official investigation has been launched to determine the origin of the fire. Preliminary theories suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault or unauthorized nearby burning, a practice reportedly common in the area. Final confirmation is still pending.
