Unexpected Tornado Hits Rome, Italy

A violent tornado struck northeastern Rome on June 3, with winds estimated at over 100 km/h (62 mph) and possibly reaching 140 km/h (87 mph). The storm uprooted around 60 trees, damaged buildings, and caused widespread disruption across districts including Prati Fiscali and Conca d’Oro.

ROME, June 4 – One day after a violent tornado tore through northern Rome, the Italian capital is still coming to terms with the scale of the destruction. Just hours before the storm struck, the city was enduring summer-like heat, with little indication that a dramatic and potentially deadly weather event was about to unfold.

Instead, residents witnessed a sudden transformation of the urban landscape as a powerful tornado swept across the northeastern districts of Rome near the Via Salaria corridor, leaving uprooted trees, damaged traffic lights, blocked roads, and widespread disruption in its wake.

The tornado developed during an intense thunderstorm on the morning of June 3, impacting several neighborhoods including Conca d’Oro, Prati Fiscali, Salario, Nomentano, Parioli, and surrounding areas. The event generated dozens of emergency responses and caused significant transportation disruptions throughout the city.

According to Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, weather stations located outside the tornado’s core recorded wind gusts of approximately 90 km/h (56 mph). Because these instruments were not positioned directly within the damage path, meteorologists believe the strongest winds were considerably higher.

“The weather stations not located near the epicenter recorded 90 km/h. This means that where the tornado actually struck, we were certainly above 100 km/h,” Gualtieri stated during an inspection of the affected areas.

Based on the observed damage—including approximately 60 uprooted trees, roofing materials torn from buildings, damage to traffic infrastructure, and the destruction of part of a fuel station canopy—wind speeds within the vortex may have reached 100–140 km/h (62–87 mph), although a final assessment has not yet been released.

Possible EF0–EF1 Tornado

While an official rating is still pending, the damage pattern observed across Prati Fiscali, Conca d’Oro, Salario, and neighboring districts appears consistent with a tornado in the EF0 to EF1 range on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale, the internationally recognized system used to classify tornado intensity based on damage.

The EF Scale categories are defined as follows:

  • EF0: 105–137 km/h (65–85 mph) winds
  • EF1: 138–177 km/h (86–110 mph) winds
  • EF2: 178–217 km/h (111–135 mph) winds
  • EF3: 218–266 km/h (136–165 mph) winds
  • EF4: 267–322 km/h (166–200 mph) winds
  • EF5: Over 322 km/h (200+ mph) winds

At this stage, available evidence suggests the Rome tornado most likely falls within the upper EF0 or lower EF1 category, capable of uprooting mature trees, damaging roofs, overturning market structures, and causing localized structural damage.

Gualtieri also confirmed that the city administration intends to request a formal natural disaster declaration from the Lazio regional government.

“We will submit the request as soon as all the necessary data has been collected, within the required deadlines,” he stated.

The declaration would allow access to public funding mechanisms designed to support residents, businesses, and property owners affected by the tornado.

The mayor emphasized that experts consider the event highly unusual for Rome, describing it as “a tornado with an estimated return period of approximately 50 years.”

Damage Assessment Continues

Authorities caution that a complete assessment of the tornado’s impact remains ongoing.

“A full accounting of the damage will take time. We are conducting a detailed evaluation, condominium by condominium, business by business,” Gualtieri said.

Municipal officials have already confirmed that at least 40 trees belonging to Rome’s public tree inventory were destroyed or severely damaged by the storm. The number of affected private trees and properties is still being determined.

The mayor also urged caution regarding unofficial estimates of financial losses circulating in recent days, stressing that it is too early to assign a reliable monetary figure before inspections are completed.

Despite the extensive destruction, authorities report that no fatalities or serious injuries occurred during the tornado.

“Fortunately, the damage is not severe in terms of human consequences, and only a few people suffered very minor injuries,” Gualtieri noted.

Municipality III President Paolo Emilio Marchionne echoed that assessment, highlighting that the event caused widespread fear among residents while avoiding a more tragic outcome.

“Fortunately, there were no serious injuries. Some people suffered minor consequences, but the atmospheric event mainly caused significant alarm among citizens and extensive damage to private property and public infrastructure,” Marchionne said.
