Rapid Strengthening
Cosme reached hurricane strength Monday morning with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h). The system is moving slowly to the west-northwest at 6 mph (10 km/h) and is expected to maintain its current strength through tonight. A gradual northeastward turn and acceleration are forecast in the next 24–48 hours.
Despite being well offshore, Cosme is creating large swells that could affect portions of the western Mexican coastline in the coming days. These swells may produce dangerous surf and rip currents, prompting officials to advise caution for mariners and beachgoers.
No Immediate Threat to Land
At this time, no coastal warnings or watches have been issued, as Cosme is not expected to make landfall. However, the hurricane will remain under close observation. Some weakening is anticipated later this week as the system encounters cooler waters and increased wind shear, both of which could disrupt its structure.
Forecast Outlook
• Monday–Tuesday: Cosme is likely to remain at hurricane strength.
• Midweek: The storm is expected to turn northeast and begin weakening.
• Late week: Cosme may dissipate before reaching any land areas.
Stay Informed
Although Cosme poses no direct threat to land at the moment, residents in coastal Mexico and Baja California are encouraged to stay updated with official forecasts from the NHC and local authorities.
