A volatile 48-hour severe weather pattern is unfolding across the central and eastern United States as multiple fronts interact with hot, moisture-rich air from the Plains to the Mid-Atlantic.
The main storm zones stretch from eastern Colorado, southwestern Nebraska and western Kansas into Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and parts of the Mid-Atlantic. Additional severe weather risk extends across Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The setup is being driven by a trio of frontal boundaries and weak low-pressure systems moving through an unstable midsummer atmosphere. Heat and high humidity are allowing thunderstorms to develop quickly during the afternoon and evening hours, while the fronts provide the lift needed to turn scattered storms into organized clusters. The Storm Prediction Center has placed several areas under a Slight Risk, Level 2 out of 5, for severe thunderstorms, including parts of the central and northern Plains, the lower Missouri Valley, the lower Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast.
The main hazards will be damaging straight-line winds, large hail and torrential rainfall. Wind gusts could exceed 70 km/h (45 mph), with the strongest storms capable of producing gusts near 137 km/h (85 mph). Hail may reach 2.5 cm (1 inch) or larger in some of the strongest cells, particularly across the Plains, where stronger instability and steeper lapse rates can support more intense updrafts.
A few isolated tornadoes are also possible, mainly across parts of Missouri, southern Illinois and southern Indiana, where localized wind shear may briefly become favorable. However, the broader threat is expected to come from clusters of storms producing damaging winds and heavy rain rather than a major tornado outbreak.
Flash flooding is also a major concern. The Weather Prediction Center has highlighted an excessive rainfall risk from the Mid-Mississippi and Tennessee valleys into the Mid-Atlantic, where slow-moving or repeated thunderstorms may produce 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 inches) of rain in a short period. In some areas, especially where storms train over the same locations, rainfall totals could exceed 75 to 125 mm (3 to 5 inches). Cities under flood concerns include Nashville, Cincinnati, Lexington, Charleston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Wilmington and Atlantic City.

In the Mid-Atlantic, the atmosphere is especially moisture-loaded. Forecast discussions from the National Weather Service note dew points in the mid-70s °F, around 24°C, with temperatures rising through the 80s °F, around 27 to 32°C. That combination creates a humid, unstable air mass capable of supporting heavy rain rates and strong wind gusts as storms move east.
Friday will bring another round of severe weather, with the highest activity expected from Colorado and Wyoming into northeastern New Mexico, south-central Nebraska, much of Kansas, western Kentucky and Tennessee. Farther east, storms may redevelop from northern North Carolina into southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York City.
The storm risk is expected to linger into the weekend. By Saturday afternoon and evening, additional storms may form from northeastern Georgia into much of Virginia as the frontal pattern slowly shifts east.
While the pattern is not expected to produce one large, highly organized outbreak, the combination of repeated storm rounds, intense humidity, damaging winds and heavy rainfall makes this a high-impact summer severe weather event across a broad stretch of the country.of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic through early next week
