Tornadoes, Hail and Floods Pound Northern Italy, Damaging Homes, Crops, and Hospitals

Violent storms disrupt transport, overwhelm health care facilities, and devastate agriculture across Emilia-Romagna and Veneto.

A few days ago we reported on the incoming hailstorms for Italy and the surrounding area, which accurately predicted the setup for this event, based on the report by ESTOFEX.

Severe weather ripped through northern Italy on Monday, June 16, 2025, capping off three days of escalating storms that hammered Emilia-Romagna and parts of Veneto. The worst-hit areas—Modena, Bologna, Reggio Emilia, and Ravenna—saw tornadoes, large hail, flash floods, and damaging winds.

Tornadoes and hail batter Reggio Emilia and Ravenna

A tornado briefly touched down in Salvaterra (Reggio Emilia), though authorities reported no immediate damage. Elsewhere, large hailstones pelted Faenza and Lower Romagna. In the Ravenna area, high winds and hail damaged orchards and cereal crops, especially in the Senio Valley between Riolo Terme and Toranello. Fallen trees blocked local roads like Via Brisighellese.

Flash Flooding hits Modena and Bologna

Thunderstorms unleashed wind gusts up to 100 km/h (62 mph) across Bologna province, triggering floods in towns like Sasso Marconi and raising landslide threats in the Ganzole hills. In Modena, rainfall rates reached 30 mm (1 inch) in just one hour in parts of the Ceramic District and the Union of the Lands of Castles. Some areas saw up to 70 mm (3 inches) in three hours, with widespread totals between 40 and 80 mm (2 to 3 inches).

Hospitals and Infrastructure Overwhelmed

Floodwaters entered several health care facilities in Modena. In Vignola, a dialysis unit required emergency intervention to allow treatment to continue. Flooding also affected the emergency department. Castelfranco, Sassuolo, and Formigine reported similar impacts.

Landslides and Transport Chaos

A major landslide hit Borca di Cadore, burying cars and homes under thick mud and debris. Emergency services deployed heavy machinery to clear the area. Meanwhile, flights into Bologna’s Marconi Airport were suspended during the worst of the storm. Flights were diverted to Bergamo, Venice, Malpensa, Pisa, and Rome Fiumicino.

Storm Outlook

While no deaths have been reported, the storm’s toll on infrastructure, agriculture, and transportation is still being assessed. Emergency crews remain on alert as instability may continue into midweek.
