Severe Flooding Paralyzes San Jose del Monte and Metro Manila Amid Torrential Rains

The situation is tied to seasonal monsoon activity rather than an active tropical cyclone.

Widespread flooding hit parts of Luzon over the weekend, submerging roads and homes across San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, and large swaths of Metro Manila, as torrential rains overwhelmed drainage systems and rivers spilled over their banks.

Triggered by a combination of the southwest monsoon (habagat) and intensified by a passing low-pressure area, rainfall totals surged to dangerous levels, causing flash floods in urban centers and low-lying communities. Some areas reported waist-to chest-deep waters, forcing residents to evacuate.

In San Jose del Monte, entire barangays were left underwater, with major roads impassable and schools suspended. Emergency response teams deployed rescue boats to assist stranded families, while power interruptions and road closures added to the chaos.

Meanwhile, in Metro Manila, several major thoroughfares, including EDSA and España Boulevard, experienced severe traffic congestion due to flooding. Commuters were left stranded for hours, and public transportation services were disrupted.

According to PAGASA, the Philippine weather bureau, the rains were part of an enhanced southwest monsoon system that will likely continue over the next few days. The agency issued yellow to orange rainfall warnings, cautioning residents in affected areas to prepare for more potential flooding and landslides.

Disaster officials have urged residents in vulnerable zones to remain alert and follow evacuation orders. Local governments across Bulacan and the NCR activated emergency response protocols, with temporary shelters opened for displaced individuals.

“This is one of the most intense monsoon surges we’ve experienced this early in the season,” said a PAGASA meteorologist. “Climate change is amplifying the frequency and severity of rainfall events, especially in highly urbanized and flood-prone areas like Metro Manila.”

As of this writing, no casualties have been confirmed, but damage to property and infrastructure is still being assessed. Social media was flooded with images and videos of submerged streets, floating vehicles, and dramatic rescues.

What Residents Should Do:

  • Stay tuned to official weather updates from PAGASA
  • Avoid traveling through flooded areas
  • Prepare emergency supplies and evacuation plans
  • Report landslides or blocked waterways to local authorities

With more rain forecast in the coming days, authorities are warning that the situation could worsen. Communities are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.
