Severe Flash Flooding Hits Cagayan de Oro City, Sweeps Vehicles and Triggers Rescues

Torrential monsoon rains and a nearby low-pressure system trigger sudden flooding, vehicle washouts, and rescue operations across Cagayan de Oro City.

Torrential monsoon rains battered Cagayan de Oro City overnight, unleashing severe flash floods that swept away vehicles and triggered emergency rescue operations across multiple barangays.

The flooding—driven by the intensified southwest monsoon (habagat) and a low-pressure area just outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)—hit hardest in Barangay Camaman-an, where water rapidly inundated streets, homes, and commercial establishments.

According to local officials, a jeepney and a motorcycle were washed away by powerful floodwaters, highlighting the sudden strength of the deluge. Residents caught off guard by the rising currents were rescued by emergency responders using boats and improvised flotation devices.

“We barely had time to move our belongings before the water came rushing in,” said one resident. “It was fast, deep, and terrifying.”

Earlier in the day, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) had forecast light rain and thunderstorms over the Cagayan de Oro River Basin, with normal water levels expected. However, weather conditions quickly escalated in the evening, dumping an estimated 50 to 100 mm (1.97 to 3.94 inches) of rain over parts of Misamis Oriental, intensifying surface runoff and overwhelming drainage systems.

PAGASA issued Heavy Rainfall Warning No. 2 for Northern Mindanao by 8:50 PM local time on June 10, cautioning the public of possible flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas, especially near mountainous terrain.

The ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet) had also flagged Cagayan de Oro and surrounding areas in its June 9 forecast, warning of possible flooding due to expected heavy rainfall over the next 72 hours.

As cleanup begins, officials are continuing to monitor river levels and advising residents to stay alert. Temporary shelters have been set up for displaced families, and authorities urge communities in flood-prone areas to prepare for potential additional rainfall in the coming days.
