An increasingly volatile weather pattern is taking shape across the central and eastern United States as a powerful upper-level heat dome expands over the eastern half of the country. Along its northern edge, a series of atmospheric disturbances is interacting with extremely warm, moisture-rich air, creating a classic “Ring of Fire” setup capable of producing repeated rounds of severe thunderstorms through the Independence Day weekend.
The combination of extreme instability, abundant Gulf moisture and strong wind shear is expected to generate multiple episodes of severe weather from the Central Plains into the Great Lakes, Midwest and Northeast, with damaging winds, very large hail, isolated tornadoes and flash flooding all possible.

The NOAA Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed portions of central Nebraska and western Iowa under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms on July 3, including the Omaha metropolitan area.
A frontal boundary draped across the central Plains will interact with intense daytime heating and a highly unstable air mass, with forecast instability exceeding 3,000 to 4,000 J/kg. As a shortwave disturbance moves eastward, thunderstorms are expected to rapidly develop during the afternoon before organizing into supercells and fast-moving bowing line segments.
Forecasters warn that storms may produce wind gusts exceeding 75 mph (120 km/h), along with large to very large hail measuring up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter. A few tornadoes are also possible, although damaging straight-line winds remain the primary threat.

A broader Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) extends from the Upper Great Lakes through the Midwest and into portions of the Mid-Atlantic and southern Appalachians.
Repeated thunderstorms may also trigger localized flash flooding across eastern Nebraska and Iowa, where high atmospheric moisture and slow-moving storm clusters could produce excessive rainfall.
Storm threat shifts east for Independence Day
As the upper-level pattern evolves, the corridor of severe weather is forecast to shift eastward on Independence Day.
Another Slight Risk has been outlined from the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City. Strong daytime heating combined with oppressive humidity will create an environment favorable for scattered severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging downburst winds during the afternoon and evening.
Additional severe thunderstorms are also expected to redevelop across the central Plains, including parts of Kansas, where isolated supercells producing large hail and damaging winds remain possible.
Many outdoor Independence Day celebrations, fireworks displays and holiday travel plans across the eastern United States could be affected by rapidly developing thunderstorms.
While severe thunderstorms develop around the edge of the ridge, millions of people beneath the heat dome continue to experience dangerous heat.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns that widespread “major to extreme” HeatRisk will persist through the holiday weekend across much of the eastern United States.
Temperatures are forecast to remain 10 to 20°F (6 to 11°C) above average, while heat index values could reach 105 to 115°F (41 to 46°C) across parts of the Mid-South, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
Extreme Heat Warnings remain in effect across portions of more than 20 states, including major metropolitan areas such as New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C., where several daily temperature records have already fallen. Overnight temperatures are also expected to remain unusually warm, limiting recovery from daytime heat stress.
Meteorologists expect the Ring of Fire pattern to remain active through the weekend as additional disturbances continue to ride around the northern edge of the heat dome.
Alongside the continuing threat of dangerous heat, repeated rounds of severe thunderstorms capable of producing destructive winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes and localized flash flooding are expected to affect broad portions of the central and eastern United States before a cold front begins bringing cooler air into the Midwest and East early next week.
