Historic Warmth Spreads Across Western Europe

A late-May 2026 heatwave brought record-breaking temperatures across Western Europe, with values 10 to 15°C above average. A persistent heat dome drove conditions more typical of mid-summer than late spring, shattering national records across multiple countries.

Across large portions of Western Europe, temperatures climbed 10 to 15°C above average for late May, creating conditions typically associated with the peak of summer. In many regions, the atmosphere behaved more like mid-July than the final days of spring.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the late-May 2026 heatwave was not only the absolute temperatures reached, but also the magnitude of the anomaly compared to seasonal norms.

The persistent heat dome anchored over Western Europe prevented cooler Atlantic air masses from reaching the continent. Instead, a continuous transport of exceptionally warm air from North Africa, combined with strong solar heating and sinking air beneath the high-pressure system, allowed temperatures to rise to unprecedented levels.

Even as the most intense phase of the heatwave gradually eased toward the beginning of June, temperatures remained 5 to 10°C above average across many countries.

The United Kingdom Rewrites the Record Books Twice in Two Days

The United Kingdom experienced one of its most extraordinary heat events in recorded history.

On Monday, May 25th, temperatures reached 34.8°C at Kew Gardens in London, breaking the national May temperature record that had stood since 1922 and 1944.

What made the event even more remarkable was that the new record survived for less than 24 hours.

On Tuesday, May 26th, temperatures climbed even higher, reaching 35.1°C at Kew Gardens and establishing a new national benchmark. The previous all-time May record of 32.8°C was exceeded by more than 2°C, an extraordinary margin in climatological terms.

Records are typically broken by tenths of a degree. During this heatwave, some of Europe’s longest-standing temperature records were surpassed by several whole degrees.

The event also produced exceptionally warm nights. Camborne, in southwest England, recorded a minimum temperature of 21.4°C, marking one of the warmest May nights ever observed in the United Kingdom and a notable tropical night where temperatures failed to drop below 20°C.

These unusually warm nights significantly increased heat stress by preventing buildings and people from cooling down after sunset.

France Experiences Its Hottest May Conditions on Record

France also endured extraordinary heat throughout the week.

Temperatures reached or exceeded 36°C across numerous regions, resulting in what Météo-France described as the hottest May conditions observed since records began.

By May 28th, temperatures approached 40°C in parts of southern France, levels that would be considered exceptional even during the hottest weeks of summer.

The French government confirmed that at least seven deaths had been linked directly or indirectly to the heatwave, including multiple drowning incidents as people sought relief from the oppressive temperatures.

The combination of unprecedented daytime heat, exceptionally warm nights, and the duration of the event placed significant stress on vulnerable populations across the country.

Meteorologists across Europe have described the late-May 2026 heatwave as one of the most exceptional early-season heat events ever documented on the continent.

The event combined several extraordinary characteristics rarely seen together:

  • Temperatures 10 to 15°C above seasonal averages.
  • National heat records shattered across multiple countries.
  • Consecutive days of record-breaking temperatures.
  • Numerous tropical nights far outside normal spring conditions.
  • Hundreds of local and regional records exceeded by several degrees.
  • Significant societal impacts, including fatalities, wildfires, infrastructure stress, and water shortages.

Taken together, these factors make the May 2026 heatwave one of the most remarkable heat events ever observed in Europe before the official start of meteorological summer.

For many locations, temperatures typically associated with the hottest periods of July arrived more than a month early, highlighting both the intensity of the atmospheric pattern and the increasing influence of a warming climate on European weather extremes.
