Europe’s Third Heatwave Fuels Explosive Wildfires Across France

A third major heatwave in just six weeks is driving dangerous wildfire conditions across France, where an expanding blaze south of Paris has become one of the country’s largest fires of the year.

A major wildfire continues to burn through the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris as France endures its third significant heatwave in just six weeks. Although firefighters have stopped the fire’s forward progression, flare-ups continue as hot, dry and windy conditions keep the forest vulnerable to reignition.

The blaze, located about 70 km (43 mi) south of the French capital, has burned approximately 2,000 hectares (4,940 acres) of forest after two separate fires merged into one of the country’s largest wildfires of the year. Water-bombing aircraft have been repeatedly skimming the River Seine to collect water, while helicopters and hundreds of firefighters remain on the scene. Authorities have arrested two people as investigators examine the suspected human cause of the fire.

The wildfire developed during Europe’s third major heatwave in just six weeks, a pattern that has repeatedly exposed large parts of the continent to prolonged periods of exceptional heat, very low humidity and critically dry vegetation. Earlier this week, around 26 million people across France, including the Paris metropolitan area, were placed under the country’s highest red heatwave warning as temperatures climbed toward 39°C (102°F).

These meteorological conditions have created an environment highly favorable for rapid fire growth. Persistent high pressure has suppressed cloud formation and rainfall across much of western Europe, while repeated heatwaves have progressively dried forests and soils. Hot, occasionally gusty winds have further accelerated fire spread by lowering vegetation moisture and carrying embers well ahead of the main fire front.

Although the fire was declared contained on Tuesday evening, firefighters reported multiple flare-ups on Wednesday after winds strengthened across the area. Crews continued laying fire retardant along roads to prevent flames from jumping containment lines, while four water-bombing aircraft and two helicopters remained deployed over the forest.

One of the biggest challenges is the nature of the ground itself. Parts of the Fontainebleau forest contain peat-rich soils that can continue smoldering beneath the surface long after visible flames disappear. These underground fires retain heat for days and can quickly reignite when exposed to oxygen or stronger winds, requiring enormous quantities of water to extinguish completely.

The fire has scorched around 2,000 hectares (4,940 acres), with some flames stopping only a few metres from homes. Hundreds of evacuated residents have gradually begun returning to inspect their properties, while firefighters continue monitoring steep terrain and isolated hotspots where access remains difficult.

The Fontainebleau blaze is contributing to what is becoming an exceptional wildfire season in France. More than 35,400 hectares (87,500 acres) have burned nationwide so far in 2026, roughly four times the recent average and already exceeding the country’s total burned area for all of 2025. The fire also marked one of the largest aerial firefighting operations ever conducted near the Paris region, highlighting how dangerous fire weather is expanding beyond France’s traditionally fire-prone Mediterranean south.

The heatwave is not only fueling wildfires but also taking an increasing toll on public health across Europe. Preliminary estimates from EuroMOMO indicate that approximately 10,600 heat-related deaths have occurred during this summer’s heatwaves, while a separate analysis by Politico estimated around 14,000 excess deaths across six European countries during June’s heatwave alone.

The dangerous conditions are expected to continue spreading across southern Europe. Italy is forecast to enter another prolonged period of extreme heat, with forecasters warning of high humidity, tropical nights and temperatures reaching 42 to 43°C (108 to 109°F) across inland parts of Sardinia. Those conditions are expected to maintain a high wildfire risk across much of the central Mediterranean.

Although temperatures are forecast to ease gradually across parts of France later this week, vegetation remains critically dry after weeks of repeated heatwaves. Combined with lingering drought and occasional gusty winds, these conditions mean the wildfire danger will remain elevated, even where the largest fires have been brought under control.
