Emergency Declared as Wildfire Erupts in Kahikinui, Maui

Winds fuel fast-moving blaze that prompts evacuations and strains firefighting resources.

A fast-moving wildfire erupted near Kahikinui, Maui on the morning of June 15, 2025, triggering swift evacuations and a countywide emergency declaration. By evening, the fire had scorched approximately 202 hectares (500 acres) of dry brushland, fueled by steep terrain and winds gusting up to 80 km/h (50 mph).

Evacuations and Impact

Residents between mile markers 24 and 25 along Pi‘ilani Highway were ordered to evacuate shortly after 11:00 a.m. local time. In total, 105 homestead lots were affected, though no injuries or structural damage have been reported.

The Maui Fire Department deployed six engine companies, two tanker trucks, three rapid-response minis, and four aircraft to battle the flames. A temporary evacuation point was initially set up at Grandma’s Coffee House but later moved to a full shelter at King Kekaulike High School’s gymnasium.

Weather Challenges

Weather conditions have made containment difficult. Persistent winds and dry brush are expected to continue through the night, with no meaningful rainfall in the immediate forecast.

Emergency Declaration

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen declared a state of emergency at 17:45 local time. This action enables federal support for ongoing firefighting operations, public safety measures, and aid for displaced residents.

Local authorities urge residents to stay alert, follow official updates, and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
